Southampton, PA: September 27, 2007 - Environmental Tectonics Corporation (AMEX:ETC) ("ETC" or the "Company") today announced that Dr. Buzz Aldrin will address the attendees of the National Aerospace Training and Research (NASTARSM) Center's Launch Ceremony on October 4th. Dr. Aldrin will also perform a demonstration of a simulated space launch on NASTAR Center's STS-400 spaceflight simulator.
The purpose of the Launch Ceremony is to open the doors of the NASTARSM Center for business, and to showcase the capabilities of the NASTARSM Center to aerospace firms, the media, and the general public. The Launch Ceremony is being held on October 4th, the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launch, to commemorate the first 50 years of spaceflight and to inaugurate the next fifty years, in which personal spaceflight will play an increasing role.
The STS-400, or Space Training Simulator, 4th generation, is a 25-foot arm centrifuge with a gondola that can be dynamically controlled to model the flight profile of any flying vehicle or spacecraft. Dr. Aldrin will ride in a module designed to resemble a spacecraft cabin, and with full, real world visual displays and realistic sustained G forces, will experience an authentic simulation of an actual space launch. Dr. Aldrin will be joined by private space travelers Anousheh Ansari and Greg Olsen, who have visited the International Space Station, in demonstration flight of the STS-400.
In its application as the ATFS-400, or Authentic Tactical Fighting System, 4th generation, the centrifuge is used for high-G tactical fast jet training and simulation for Navy and Air Force pilots. Cockpits of specific aircraft are modeled by a Tactical Aircraft Configuration Module, or TACModuleTM, which can be flown by a pilot trainee just like the actual aircraft, including sustained elevated G exposure.
Dr. Buzz Aldrin, is a retired Colonel of the United States Air Force, and was a NASA astronaut aboard Gemini XII and Apollo XI. A West Point graduate (third in his class) and decorated Korean War fighter pilot, Buzz Aldrin joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1963 after earning his Doctorate of Science from MIT with a thesis on Orbital Rendezvous. He set a record 5-½ hour spacewalk when he flew the last Gemini mission with Jim Lovell. On July 20, 1969 Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong were the first two human beings to set foot on the moon as the world's largest television viewing audience watched this unprecedented endeavor. William F. Mitchell, President and Chairman of ETC, stated, "We are very pleased to host Buzz, along with Anousheh and Greg, at NASTARSM Center's Launch Ceremony. We have worked hard to develop a comprehensive space launch training program, and we look forward to getting Buzz's reactions and comments on the program. It will be a very exciting day for us, and a great way celebrate the opening of NASTARSM Center's doors for business."
The NASTARSM Center, located at ETC's corporate headquarters in Southampton, PA, houses state-of-the-art equipment and professional staff to support the training and research needs of the aerospace community, including military aviation (fixed and rotary wing), civil aviation (fixed and rotary wing), space travel (government and private) and research support and data collection. NASTARSM Center's equipment and programs are highly modular and flexible and can accommodate a wide range of aerospace training and research requirements.
