Southampton, PA: April 19, 2004. Environmental Tectonics Corporation (AMEX:ETC) (the "Company") is pleased to announce it has received a contract from a university hospital in Eastern Europe to supply one BARA-MED̉ monoplace hyperbaric chamber and accessories. The chamber will be installed in the hospital to provide hyperbaric oxygen therapy in support of a variety of clinical departments and for the university to perform research on the clinical application of Hyperbaric Oxygen. To ETC's knowledge, the BARA-MED® will be the first monoplace hyperbaric chamber in the country.
Like all BARA-MED® Monoplace chambers delivered to countries within the EC, the unit will be CE Marked to the current requirements, which demand compliance with the 97/23/EEC Pressure Equipment Directive as well as the 93/42/EEC Medical Devices Directive. The chamber also features a standard, PC-based automatic control system that now incorporates ETC's patient-friendly Smooth-Ride™ compression protocol. As demonstrated through US Air Force research and practical experience over the last year, this compression protocol dramatically reduces discomfort and complications due to middle ear squeeze during chamber pressurization.
Russell E. Peterson, Ph.D., Director of the BioMedical Systems Group, stated, "One of the major factors in this customer's selection of ETC was the unique features provided as a standard part of the chamber system. In addition to the PC-based automatic control system, the BARA-MED® also features a large 30" inside diameter, a standard hospital adjustable height gurney, integrated connectors for attaching to critical care medical monitoring leads, and patient support penetrations for providing IV Infusion and connecting the patient to a ventilator / respirator. These features, coupled with ETC's ability to provide strong after-sales support through our in-country distributor assured the hospital that the chamber would provide many years of reliable treatment capability."
Currently, both in the United States and overseas, only a small percentage of hospitals offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The number of chambers is increasing, however, as the benefits of hyperbaric medicine become more widely recognized by mainstream medicine. As this development occurs, ETC's BioMedical Systems Group strives to keep its equipment and customers at the forefront of hyperbaric medicine. As a consequence, in addition to their regular use in clinical treatments at medical facilities around the world, ETC hyperbaric chambers are routinely involved in research on new indications for which HBO holds promise.
ETC designs, develops, installs and maintains aircrew training systems, public entertainment systems, process simulation systems (sterilization and environmental), clinical hyperbaric systems, environmental testing and simulation systems, and related products for domestic and international customers.
